This camera performs beautifully in both visible and infrared light, but like many IR conversions, it suffers from a central IR hot spot at some zoom positions. Shooting at the wider end of the zoom I've had no hot-spot issues, but they crop up in about the middle third of the zoom range under certain lighting and filtration conditions. Well, I have had this camera for more than 2 years now and I can say it is GREAT, The bundle I got was a futureshop exclusive that consisted of 1 18-55mm lens (the same one thats included with all the other bundles) a 50-200mm lens, and two 2GB PNY SD cards for $850 (a sweet deal at the time)I was at the time upgrading from a 1.3 megapixel fujifilm point and shoot. When I first got the camera I was AMAZED at the quality of photos, the built in shake reduction worked wonders and the auto focus was pretty quick. The kit lenses are very good and I still use the 18-55mm for 'general' shots to this day.

After I got those 2 lenses I couldn't stop there, I went on an auction site, pawn shops, camera shops, and on Amazon and got some sweet deals,

My first purchase after I got the camera was a standalone flash unit, After 2 weeks of looking around I finally settled on a Vitar unit that works very well and got it for $50 (was the last one, and was being discontinued) After that I went to a used camera shop and picked up and older small Pentax brand camera bag, and a lens carrier for $5 (they were both in 'make me an offer' bins)

Shortly after that I went to a pawn shop and seen another Pentax brand bag (was much larger, and with some new lenses on the way was just what I needed) I opened it up and it was an older film Pentax (was an auto focus model) and it has 2 Pentax lenses in there I instantly scooped it up for $55 (can remember the mm of them don't have the lenses here:D)Then on amazon I piked up a few more lenses (A Takumar, and a mirror type lens) Both were long range type and both suited my needs. I then went on a certain auction site and picked up 7-8 lenses there, they were all either Pentax or Asahai Pentax and included a fisheye,pancake and other various sizes, unfortunately all the sliver limited edition lenses constantly went above my price limit. Now with all those lenses I needed a camera backpack, I got one for cheap ($25) It was waterproof and had very thick padding, even tho it was cheap, to this day it has held up well with no rips.

The Pentax K100D is a very rugged camera for the first year of its life it was used constantly I took it everywhere, And even now the LCD is scratch free and the camera body looks like I just bought it yesterday!

Unfortunately, after I had used this camera for a year, I lost interest in amateur photography all together, It sat in its case for over a year before I finally decided to get into it again. And even tho now it seen as 'old' and 'outdated' It still takes suburb shots, I don't think however I'll be getting anymore lenses for it anytime soon. (I only use the original 2 lenses the camera came with, so far I just use the camera occasionally)

I got into photography back in the 1980s with a film SLR camera. Since then, I had made do with some basic Kodak point and shoot digital cameras which I was very happy with, but did not offer the flexibility of an SLR. When I finally needed to get a digital SLR for a project, I admittedly didn't know a lot about the choices. I did some on-line research and realized that the Pentax offered the most flexibility. You can use rechargeable AA batteries, an SD card and ANY Pentax SLR lens ever made. That means you have access to one of the most popular lens mounts ever made. In any case, I felt that was worth the tradeoff in less resolution and the reliance on menu-driven features. So far I've been pretty happy with the camera. It seems fairly easy to use for basic photography and if you are willing to learn all of the menu options and practice, you can do all sorts of things with the camera. I don't have experience with comparable cameras from other makers such as Canon or Nikon, but I would say that if you are looking for a relatively affordable and fleixible digital SLR, this is a pretty good choice. The only thing I can see that the camera is missing is a plug for a PC-connection for an external flash, but that's a relatively small thing. I call the Nikon D100 the "VOLVO" of digital SLR cameras. It is safe and rugged, and once you buy one, you cannot buy any other. I bought the D100 about 3 months ago, and after test-driving it for a few months, I have been very happy with it.

Photography has been my hobby for the past 12 years. I am an avid (and loyal) Nikon user, being the owner of the N70, N90, F4, and F5 35mm SLR cameras (yes, I have a thing for Nikon). Therefore, it is almost logical for me to stick with the Nikon brand, and hope that the lenses are interchangeable.

I was quite skeptical about the capabilities of digital cameras, and I never thought digital technology will be able to catch up to film resolution for a while. Until now. I have to say that the Nikon D100 convinced me to take the first steps towards the digital revolution.

Now, I primarily use the Nikon D100, and use my film cameras as back-up. I've only used my film cameras during rainy days, so that my new toy/investment would not get wet.

I've made a brief list of what I noticed about the D100.

Pros:
-instant on
-fast response
-nice fit in [my] hand; very ergonomic
-superb resolution
-default pictures have higher contrast
-compatible with Nikon lenses, especially the Nikor F mount lens
-LCD monitor cover comes with the camera(Thanks, Nikon!)

Cons:
-6MP, compared to the 8MP of the Canon (20D and 350D)
-moire effects
-no firewire connection
-does not properly tag JPEG images with correct color profile; have to use Nikon View software to separate images for full Adobe compatibility

One camera that almost swayed me away was the Canon EOS 20D. I was fortunate to have friends who have these cameras, so I was able to make a head-to-head comparison of the Nikon vs. the Canon, and the pictures and features "side-by-side." The pros and cons of each camera balance each other out, so in the end, it all comes down to personal preference, and what you like or dislike about these cameras.

For me, it was because of loyalty* and investment. I saved a few thousand dollars because my lenses (especially the Nikor F mount lens) are compatible with the Nikon D100 (I was informed that they are also compatible with the D70, but that is second-hand information).

Conclusion: The Nikon D100 is a great camera, which is cheap enough for the amateur photographer, and advanced enough for the professional photographer.

I am far from a professional photographer, but I take it as seriously as possible while still referring to it as a hobby. I take mostly pictures of people at events and many of my baby son without flash in low light situations.

I had been using a Nikon D40x for 1 year and very early reached my limitation with that camera. The Nikon D40x has very nice image quality, but the camera's interface is not suited for a more serious shooter who wants quick single button or dial access to such shooting parameters such as white balance, shooting mode, metering mode, etc. I also felt very limited by the D40x not having an in-body focus motor that would allow me to use non AF-I/AF-S lenses (which are lenses without the focus motor built-in).

The Nikon D40x limitations were severe enough that I was about to consider purchasing a Canon 40D until the Nikon D90 appeared just in time.

PROS:

1. Fantastic set of separate buttons on the camera to control parameters like ISO, white balance, metering, autofocus, image quality, shooting mode, etc.
2. Two command dials
3. High resolution 920K pixel LCD screen (like the one on the Nikon D300)
4. 12.3 megapixel CMOS sensor
5. Low noise high ISO capability (for low light shooting) I can shoot ISO 1600 with good image quality with this camera, while on my D40x I could only shoot with ISO 400 and obtain acceptable IQ. I will even use ISO 3200 frequently with very usable results!
6. Separate top-viewing LCD screen in addition to the rear high res screen, to show shooting parameters constantly
7. In-body focus motor which allows the use of Nikon's non AF-I/S lenses, including wonderful and CHEAP prime lenses such as the Nikkor 50mm 1.8 (~$100 lens!)
8. Continuous shooting of 4.5 frames per second
9. Small size, although larger than the D40/D40x/D60, it is still substantially smaller in the hand than the D300/D3
10. 720p 24fps MPEG video shooting capability with incredible ability to use depth of field that I cannot achieve with my Sony High-Def camcorder.
11. Eleven auto-focus points (not as nice as the 51 points on the D300, but substantially better than my D40x with its 3 points)
12. GPS option
13. HDMI output
14. Enormous number of options to customize camera and shooting settings to fit your style of shooting
15. Fantastic image quality right out-of-box if you don't want to do any post processing
16. Terrific build quality
17. Top notch camera ergonomics (but this will be a very personal opinion that differs for each shooter)

CONS:

1. "Rolling shutter" phenomenon while recording video: The D90 CMOS sensor has the same problem that other CMOS video recorders have when recording video. If you move the camera, especially horizontally, you get a "jelly" or "rubberbanding" effect where the image wobbles significantly. It is nice to have the video features, which looks very sharp at 720p, but it is NOT a substitute for a video camera. If you use a tripod, and do not do quick zooms/pans, the video quality is excellent. Without a tripod, however, you may get nauseas watching a wobbly video. The sound is also in monoaural.
2. 1/200 flash synch: Not a problem for me, but it might be for you.
3. No weather sealing: This is found on the Nikon D300/D3 and even on similarly priced models from other camera companies
4. The buffer will fill up after about 8 continuous RAW + JPG (FINE) shots. This number differs depending on the shooting parameters that you will choose. If you shoot primarily JPG, the buffer seems to allow a very large number of continuous shots, but I have not quantified this for JPG only.

TIPS:

1. Get the FREE Nikon ViewNX software from Nikon's site as your 1st step in your workflow. This will let you examine your RAW images that you can process for either Nikon CaptureNX2 to do further RAW processing or just export to JPG for a JPG editor such as PhotoShop.
2. Recommend buying the Nikon CaptureNX2. It is a RAW converter (if you shoot in RAW) that will read the camera settings properly for export to JPG. Capture NX2, however, is not as slick as the Adobe products and Capture NX2 requires a fairly powerful computer, otherwise it can run pretty slowly on a PC > 3 years old.
3. If you use JPEGs out-of-camera, consider increasing the sharpness above the default 3 or 4. Nikon uses a very conservative sharpening default setting. Nikon has decided to change the default JPEG images to match the higher end D3/D700/D300 cameras which produce more neutral images. Consequently, the D90 images that are less punchy than the D40/D40x/D60/D80, so you may also want to turn up the in-camera saturation and contrast.

Lots of trouble getting my million dollar digi to focus. (I got it as a gift dec 03) I have an original rebel, Elan 7E and consider myself pretty experienced with canon. Pentax K110D 6.1MP Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens

Have been a Pentax user since the 1980's and own several of these fine instruments and more important a small arsenal of K mount lenses. Got the K110D as a replacement under warranty from Pentax (broke down after only two months of use and had to wait 6 months for the unrepaired IstDL to be returned to me as repaired - sent it back and demanded the camera to be replaced. By then the IstDL was discontinued and got from Pentax USA a brand new K110D body instead) - Well, it has been a GREAT camera, takes all my K lenses and other accessories - Pentax and third party, without any trouble. Lenses with an A setting perform flawlessly. I do not have stabilization but I do not need it since I shoot mostly with a tripod. I love the results from this body. The only minus I can talk about is the 18-55mm DA kit lens since it is not a match for the older Pentax primes or even some Kiron zooms. The only advantage of this lens is the convenience. Conclusion, great SLR Body - If you already own some good quality K lenses, this and other Pentax DSLR's are the way to go. You'll not be disappointed.

Panasonic DMC-L1 7.5MP Digital SLR Camera with Leica 14-50mm Mega O.I.S. Lens

This is a great camera with a stunning tack-sharp lens. That said, many owners on the Leica forum have reported a problem with the 14-50 lens that comes on the camera. The lens sometime comes with, or later develops, the problem of binding of the zoom function, which after time locks up completely or at best restricts zoom movement. Also, several new owners have reported that they have received a camera with a lens whose front end is "loose" and can be wiggled back and forth. This is alarming, but does not seem to effect the camera focus, at least on my DMC-L1 with its case of front end wobbles. Alas, also my lens seem to be developing the dreading zoom restriction about mid zoom.

So, if you do purchase this camera, do carefully check out the 14-50mm lens for what appears to be, or have been, a widespread manufacturing defect. The lens should zoom in and out smoothly. If there is a slight restriction or a "catch" in the movement, you're likely in for downline trouble.

With a defect-free lens, this camera is superb, and well worth the potential hassle of returning the product for replacement if you find yourself with a lens whose zoom function fails and binds.

The DMC-L1 is considerably less expensive than the Leica branded version, and offers the feel and advantages of the range finder cameras like the Leica M3 or the Nikon SP, so loved by photojournalists of yesteryear. I'm a serious amateur who has used the D70s for nearly three years for paid gigs and personal use. Focusing and frame rate are fast enough for nearly every event I've ever been to. Photojournalists will be pleased, but sport shooters may want to look for another option.

don't let the lower MP count scare you away from this little gem; prints enlarge just fine up to 11X14 (I don't usually print larger than that). Battery life on the D70s leaves nothing to be wanted. I've shot almost all day on one charge. if you bring a spare battery, you'll have no worries.

The LCD is on the smaller side, but its adequate for checking exposure, and you can also detect any camera shake. No complaints. The menu system is very straightforward and easy to use.

Controls on the camera body are placed within easy reach and you can change most settings without removing your eye from the viewfinder -- a big plus. Metering is usually very good, but sometimes I've had to use compensation to nail exposure. some people make this out to be a huge problem, but it really isn't. just know enough about your camera to make it do what you want it to do under any lighting conditions.

I gave the D70s a four instead of five because after a couple years of use, the built-in flash seems to be dying an early death. It doesn't fire all the time anymore. Not a huge problem if you use speedlights attached to the body, but it has become a problem in the nikon creative lighting system, which is one of the reasons I wanted the camera.

First of all, this is a fantastic camera. Worth 5 stars by itself, easily. But this review is going to be about the refurbished XSi specifically. If you want to see a review of the camera's features, go check out the hundreds of existing reviews here: NEW Canon EOS D-Rebel XSi

Quick caveat: I purchased the silver model, not the black one listed here. They are functionally equivalent though, and if anything, the pristine nature of my silver model speaks even more highly of Canon's refurb process, since the silver ones are known to blemish easier than the black ones.

I'll be honest -- I never thought I'd be this excited about the arrival of a D-Rebel! That's nothing against the camera, as I said it's easily a 5-star camera. But I currently own a 40D and a 5D Mark II. I bought the XSi so that I could turn it around and send it off to have converted into a full-time infrared camera. My thinking was that I won't care as much about the condition of the camera since it will have a very specialized purpose anyway. I might as well save some money and get a used or refurb body.

Well, let me tell you what a great job Canon does on their refurbished cameras!

I received the package from Adorama, in a sealed Canon box. It includes all of the bits and pieces that a new DSLR body comes with -- instruction manuals, software CD's, cables, a neck strap, a battery and a charger. All of these items are brand new, in sealed packages.

The camera body itself is an absolute joy. If it wasn't for the small gold "Refurbished" sticker on the bottom next to the tripod socket, the camera would be absolutely, 100% indistinguishable from a new one. It's obvious that any piece that had any signs of use had been replaced with new components. The screen was brand new (and even had that new-electronics-static-cling-protector-thingy on it), and there were zero signs of use on the controls. Mirror box was also spotless and free of dust.

All in all, I can't believe it. What a great deal! It even comes with a 90-day Canon warranty, so you don't have to worry about getting a dead one.

It's significantly cheaper than buying a new one. Based on my experience, I can heartily recommend getting your hands on a refurb model and saving some cash. Just make sure you're getting one like this -- refurbished by Canon, not just cleaned and labeled "refurbished" by a questionable seller.

I owned this camera since spring of 2008,
So at the point of writing this review, I used it for nearly a year.

Now, if you are earlier owner, you might have experienced a problem or two.
I was unfortunately one of the owner experienced problem, and had to ship it back to Canon for the warranty repair. So, I was not exactly happy about paying expensive FEDEX freight.

But, rest assured, no other nasty problem occurred after warranty repair, and this camera has been workhorse of my photography.

Now, let get on the review.

This is really wonderful 21.1MP camera, and it is well worth the money.
But, you have to determine if you need to use one.

At the time of release, there were no other full size sensor camera with this resolutions.
Of course, it has been since passed by other manufacture... but I will not going to that comparison.

For Professional User.

Important thing about this camera is economics.

I own EOS 5D as well, and when non-commissioned or low paid project, I tend to bring 5D instead of 1DS MK3.
It is due to the fact, overall operational cost tend to be higher on the 1DS MK3 so if does not paid well, there will be no point to bring it out.

But, if it does paid well. there are enough justification to own this system, and you should used it as much as you can.

And this system is really reliable, once you get past some getting used to.

One more note,

Now I do own several different system including Hasselblad Medium format.
Medium Format Digital System is superior system when you are working in the control lighting environment. However, it is rather difficult to work with in the outside activity.

If you are studio photographer with magazine or commercial client, and do occasional out side shoot, you should own both medium format and this camera.

If you are professional just wondering about medium format and full size sensor camera,but without pressing need, then do not bother with medium format.

People who uses medium format digital normally has pressing reason such as satisfying client's specifications to own such system.
And it is not really versatile system no matter how medium format camera maker and digital back manufacture portray.

Canon 1DS MK3 is really versatile system, and it will satisfy most of design agency, publisher or stock photo agency's requirement, and L lens system are reasonably priced for the performance when looking at the economics.

For Semi Pro or High Amateurs User

For semi professional. 1DS MK3 is not going to make best economic argument, if you do not shoot studio.
If you are part time photographer who shoots mainly events or doing photo journalism.
I will recommend 1DMK3 over 1DSMK3.

Also, for photo journalist purpose, nowadays 5D MK2 actually makes a lot more sense than getting 1DS MK3 due to the their HD capability.
And for the photo journalist, it is not that good idea to carry bulky system.

But, for an amateur user with a lot of spending money,

It is one of the best system to get taste of what real pro are using.
And it does not cost like price of new BMW, and for the financially resourceful amateur, 7 to 8 grand may not be much of money.

When I got 1DS MK3 there were several amateur photographer I taught how to use this camera...
Surprising thing is, there are quiet many of amateur owner, and with very limited instruction to them,
They were able to create very good quality images.

So, kudos to the Canon for new 1DS MK3 interface.
It is actually easier for 1DS first timer than older 1DS MK2 for instance.

Of course, people who were used to with 1DS MK2 or older tend to disagree on this.

Now here are list of main advantage.

1. It is 21.1MP, more than most of commercial assignment requires.

2. Color depth of 14bit per channel is really useful for RAW work flow process.

3. Economical compared to the expensive medium format system, and still get comparable or sometimes superior result if conditions are right.

4. Build like tank, and it can take a quiet bit of abuse.

5. For user who are used to with 20D~50D, 5D MK1~MK2, it is really easy to learn interface.

6. Dust cleaning is really useful.

7. AF + Canon L Lens combinations is superior to the other known system in the market as of 2008-9

8. Liveview is useful to shoot architecture, land scape, and products.

9. RAW file format is supported well by the major commercial software.

10.CF slot and SDHC slot actually helps. It did not occurred to me until I run out of memory card on the locations, and had to run to the nearby local drug store. At least they carry cheap SD/SDHC at any large drug store chains, and it is a lot easier to find those store than locating nearby large electronic store...

11. Battery Life is excellent, it will easily cover half day events with nearly a thousand of picture even with taxing RAW + JPEG shoot.

12. Due to its weight and form factor, it is a lot easier to balance with long heavy lens.

13. When used with L lens, it is somewhat comparable with expensive medium format digital back.

14. Silent shutter mode is somewhat useful.

Now here are list of disadvantage.

1. It is slightly new form factor for Canon, and there are chance you had to send it to the warranty repair if you got the earlier production model.

2.There are something wrong with design of wireless port cap. It is relatively easy to lose one since it sometimes fell off with limited torque applied. I lost several of them already... though I stocked half dozen cap after I lost my first cap.

3. It is heavy and bulky. Thus some times not a ideal for certain situations.

4. Compared to Nikon D3X, it has slightly poor SNR on the third party software RAW processing software, so certain journalistic style shoot might suffer. If you shoot in the studio controlled lighting environment, that should not be a much of issue.

5. Many of RAW development software is actually more well tuned for Nikon, This might to be due to the amount of info Canon release to the third party software developer.

6. It is hard to justify its price for the many of users.

7. However everyone else claimed, it still can not replace medium format digital camera. Lens resolution and clarity of images is not there yet. Of course, that is when looking at 1:1 images side by side.

8. Silent shutter mode is not that quiet compared to some of the most quiet camera in the market. So, application such as close quarter Jazz or Classical music shot are still off the table.

Overall, I will recommend this camera to who,

If you are photographer that shoot tons of weddings at high fee structure, you should get one. Otherwise, EOS 5D nowadays makes very attractive choice.

If you are commercial photographer with clients and sufficient invest in Canon system, why are you waiting?

If you are amateur with deep pockets, this is a camera to get, and impress your photography teacher!

I will not recommend to someone,

Trek photographer who need lighter weight gear or those wild life photographer needs of faster fps should consider other offering from Canon.

Any journalistic style should consider 1D MK3 first unless you shoot tons of interview photo.

Shooting for hobby or fine arts purpose should really consider 5D mk2 before taking financial plunge of 1DS MK3

Last year, when on assignment in Switzerland, I used several models of digital still cameras. I carried along the K10D, carefully testing the
first "shake reduction" I was ever to try.

Usually, I am a stickler for steadiness. Since my first days as a working
professional, it was always a must to employ the use of a tripod - not
only for longer exposures - but also for general shooting. Humans holding
cameras can almost never be quite as steady as a tripod or other camera stand. Think about it, our heartbeat causing pulse and cafeine shake in
our hands is nonexistent in a tripod. People do not always stand steadily
and firm.

My tests included handheld images with the shake reduction, tripodded
images without the shake reduction, and even handheld images without the
shake reduction, all cases using manual exposure settings ranging from
1/60th to 1/1000th sec., making notes as the images were casted on the
23.5x15.7mm CCD.

There is not enough room here to detail the hundreds of exposures made
during the three-days testing. Therefore, it shall suffice to say that
the K10D with its CCD-shifting shake reduction system allowed me to make
sharper pistures with three different lenses. Comparing the images made
on the tripod with those handheld using shake reduction there is not any
notable difference at 16X. Of course, one 6MP camera I tested, which did not have image-stabilization was used solely on the tripod, and images from it were as sharp as the handheld 10MP camera (not deploying shake
reduction and in similar lighting with auto-exposure.)

Other characteristics observed: The AF points on the viewfinder are red
and illuminated for easy visibility. The LCD display is large and sharp
and visible from a wide viewing angle. The DUST REMOVAL syatem is quite
effective. It actually shakes the CCD for dust removal.

The menu is not difficult to understand. The controls are splash and dust resistant and the cabinet parts and retractable seem to be nicely fitted
together.

The K10D had a good feel in my hands. The dials and buttons are all just
about exactly where they should be for ergonomic placement.

In the final analysis, the camera, in my judgement deserves five stars.

I am far from a professional photographer, but I take it as seriously as possible while still referring to it as a hobby. I take mostly pictures of people at events and many of my baby son without flash in low light situations.

I had been using a Nikon D40x for 1 year and very early reached my limitation with that camera. The Nikon D40x has very nice image quality, but the camera's interface is not suited for a more serious shooter who wants quick single button or dial access to such shooting parameters such as white balance, shooting mode, metering mode, etc. I also felt very limited by the D40x not having an in-body focus motor that would allow me to use non AF-I/AF-S lenses (which are lenses without the focus motor built-in).

The Nikon D40x limitations were severe enough that I was about to consider purchasing a Canon 40D until the Nikon D90 appeared just in time.

PROS:

1. Fantastic set of separate buttons on the camera to control parameters like ISO, white balance, metering, autofocus, image quality, shooting mode, etc.
2. Two command dials
3. High resolution 920K pixel LCD screen (like the one on the Nikon D300)
4. 12.3 megapixel CMOS sensor
5. Low noise high ISO capability (for low light shooting) I can shoot ISO 1600 with good image quality with this camera, while on my D40x I could only shoot with ISO 400 and obtain acceptable IQ. I will even use ISO 3200 frequently with very usable results!
6. Separate top-viewing LCD screen in addition to the rear high res screen, to show shooting parameters constantly
7. In-body focus motor which allows the use of Nikon's non AF-I/S lenses, including wonderful and CHEAP prime lenses such as the Nikkor 50mm 1.8 (~$100 lens!)
8. Continuous shooting of 4.5 frames per second
9. Small size, although larger than the D40/D40x/D60, it is still substantially smaller in the hand than the D300/D3
10. 720p 24fps MPEG video shooting capability with incredible ability to use depth of field that I cannot achieve with my Sony High-Def camcorder.
11. Eleven auto-focus points (not as nice as the 51 points on the D300, but substantially better than my D40x with its 3 points)
12. GPS option
13. HDMI output
14. Enormous number of options to customize camera and shooting settings to fit your style of shooting
15. Fantastic image quality right out-of-box if you don't want to do any post processing
16. Terrific build quality
17. Top notch camera ergonomics (but this will be a very personal opinion that differs for each shooter)

CONS:

1. "Rolling shutter" phenomenon while recording video: The D90 CMOS sensor has the same problem that other CMOS video recorders have when recording video. If you move the camera, especially horizontally, you get a "jelly" or "rubberbanding" effect where the image wobbles significantly. It is nice to have the video features, which looks very sharp at 720p, but it is NOT a substitute for a video camera. If you use a tripod, and do not do quick zooms/pans, the video quality is excellent. Without a tripod, however, you may get nauseas watching a wobbly video. The sound is also in monoaural.
2. 1/200 flash synch: Not a problem for me, but it might be for you.
3. No weather sealing: This is found on the Nikon D300/D3 and even on similarly priced models from other camera companies
4. The buffer will fill up after about 8 continuous RAW + JPG (FINE) shots. This number differs depending on the shooting parameters that you will choose. If you shoot primarily JPG, the buffer seems to allow a very large number of continuous shots, but I have not quantified this for JPG only.

TIPS:

1. Get the FREE Nikon ViewNX software from Nikon's site as your 1st step in your workflow. This will let you examine your RAW images that you can process for either Nikon CaptureNX2 to do further RAW processing or just export to JPG for a JPG editor such as PhotoShop.
2. Recommend buying the Nikon CaptureNX2. It is a RAW converter (if you shoot in RAW) that will read the camera settings properly for export to JPG. Capture NX2, however, is not as slick as the Adobe products and Capture NX2 requires a fairly powerful computer, otherwise it can run pretty slowly on a PC > 3 years old.
3. If you use JPEGs out-of-camera, consider increasing the sharpness above the default 3 or 4. Nikon uses a very conservative sharpening default setting. Nikon has decided to change the default JPEG images to match the higher end D3/D700/D300 cameras which produce more neutral images. Consequently, the D90 images that are less punchy than the D40/D40x/D60/D80, so you may also want to turn up the in-camera saturation and contrast.

I have been using a point and shoot and my frustration with not being able to convert what I see into a picture led me to the slr. Before buying I was quite confused as to what to go for. After reviewing a lot of products on different websites, I decided to go for Nikon D40. As an amateur slr photographer, here are my comments.
- The camera is GOOD and gives sharp pictures. Easy to pick up the basics (the dvds help).
- Get a good lens, that is what matters. I did find switching between the lens a little cumbersome, but then since I bought the camera mainly for macro-photography, I can live with it.If you got the extra buck, buy the 18-300mm Nikorr.
- I was worried about the 6 mp against the 10 mp of D40x and later models. Since I never intended to blow up the photo into a poster, probably I can live with the 6mp. Also I read reports about more noise at 10mp because of the extra sensors are packed into the same space.
- The pictures come out sharp, and if you work on your photography skill rather than blaming a camera for bad pics, you will be glad with the D40 (Read the manual, not necessarily completely before you start, but along the way). My friend bought a D60 and our pictures looked pretty much the same in terms of sharpness and color quality.
- If you are an amateur like me D40 is a good place to start. If you are a professional, you know better.

The camera is light weight and very easy to use. The shutter speed takes too long to adjust for lighting when taking pictures in dimly lit rooms, even after repeated photos in the same lighting. This is the best sub-SLR (bridge) camera there is out there.
Enough has been written about this camera by others so I am not going to go over the same things again.
Here are just a few points that I think are important, or have not been covered before.
1. I saw that some people wrote that if you want to spend this money, you might as well buy a SLR camera kit. That is a misleading idea.
Leica V-Lux 1 comes with a 35 to 430 mm original, best quality lens. There is no SLR kit on the market that covers that range at the same lens quality under $1000.00, let alone the fact that you don't have to carry two lenses to cover the same zoom range (focal distance).
2. This is the only bridge camera that offers exactly the same controls like true SLR cameras, including dial controls for aperture and speed, placed just like the controls in the Nikon SLR series. Without taking the camera from your eyes you can adjust with your index and thumb, the aperture and the exposure speed (or the Program Shift as the case may be). In the same time, with your left hand you can adjust the zoom and the manual focus rings.
3. Leica V-Lux 1, has some features encountered only in SLR-s much more expensive. In example, on the left side of the lens there is a "forced" Focus button. Even with the focus set to MANUAL mode, one can still touch with the left thumb this button and the lens focuses automatic. Then it remains further in manual mode, so you can continue to adjust it further by turning the focus ring.
3. Here is one example of how great the image stabilization works. Last week I was at my son's convocation ceremony that took place indoors in a sports arena, but it was not lit enough. My son was sitting in the middle of the stadium. I was standing all the way up. With the camera held in my hand and with the maximum zoom, I took about three pictures. One out of three came out perfectly clear. Now consider this: the exposure was 1/16sec which would absolutely require a tripod.
Further I just leaned my right elbow on a railing and then took some more pictures, and they all came out very clear at 1/8 and 1/16 sec!
4. One word of caution: If you are used to other cameras that in Auto mode allow choices on metering, focus area, etc, this camera in Auto mode offers very little options. If you want access to all the settings, you have to set it to "P" (Program Mode) which is also an "automatic" mode that allows all the settings to be changed.
5. If money is tight, but you would really like to get the Leica as opposed to the equivalent Panasonic, if you shop around you find this camera at around $750 - $800. Also, look on the Leica web site as they are offering a $150 mail in rebate (March-Apr 2008, and again July-Aug 2008, and I am sure they will offer it again), so you end up paying $600 - $650, which all of a sudden looks a lot more as a very good value.

I have a Minolta Maxxium HTsi plus camera that has served me well for many years. I also have a Minolta 28-80 mm lens, a Quantaray 75-300 mm lens, and a Quantaray 800-1200 mm lens. Consequently, I wanted to stay with a camera that could use these lenses. I have had the alpha 700 for a few weeks and the pictures are fantastic. My wife, who does not use a camera often, can set it to auto and take very good pictures while I have the freedom to change the settings to capture the shots like I want them.

It did take several days of learning and practice to learn which button and/or menu to use. I am also having to learn the differences in using a digital versus a film camera. I would advise anyone to purchase the plastic covers for the LCD monitor as it collects fingerprints, dust, and oil from your body. Wanting a new digital camera, I was hesitant (because of the price of the product) to buy off of Amazon. One of my colleagues did (similar product), so I would give it a try. Surprised by the "outfit package" and value offered by Cameta, I bought the D300 outfit. The package arrived home in pre-shipment condition, sealed with anti- pilfer tape. Multiple items packaged, empty space filled with air bags. Camera's awesome! Thank you for this smooth transaction. I wouldn't have even worried if I would have had to return it for some reason - my gut tells me that it would have went smooth and they would have done everything to make everything right.

The Sony a200 W camera is wonderful. Detail in photos is incredible. I've played with my friends Nikon and the Sony is much easier to use. I particularly like the fact that all of the common settings are addressed by their own buttons. On the Nikon for instance to change the ISO setting you have to pick through the main menu to find the setting. Also the "super steady shot" image stabilization feature is in the camera, not the lens (like the Nikon), so when I use my old Minolta lenses with the Sony (yes they fit), this feature is still available.
The camera was purchased through Amazon from Willoughby's in NYC. It came with the 18 - 70mm lens and also the 75 - 300 mm lens, the 8GB compact flash memory card that will hold over 1900 photos at highest resolution. The battery is also very impressive, although it took 5 hours to fully charge, I've taken hundreds of photos over the last 2 weeks and left the camera on for hours at a time and it still has over 65% of the charge left.
There were also other extras such as the stick-on screen protectors, a cleaning kit, a UV filter, an all-in-one card reader, and a gadget bag.
I have to say the gadget bag that is advertised as a "digital SLR gadget bag" is really the low point. It's an old video camera bag that will not fit the camera or even the extra lens. The bottom was falling out of the one that I received. It must have been hanging around the shop for years.
I am very happy with this purchase though, and I would absolutely recommend this camera to anyone.

I bought this camera 3 years ago, and it worked beautifully until on a long trip in Yellowstone. After changing the memory card, the mirror locked up, as other posts mention, making the camera completely useless. Since I was past the warranty period, Nikon told me I would be charged, even though they had (have) a vague-enough-to-weasel-out-of service advisory out for this problem. The way the service works is to receive the camera, have a front desk monkey put it into a cost-to-repair category, which you must then authorize payment for before they will proceed to actually see what is wrong with the camera. When I asked how they knew what it would cost and why it wasn't covered under the service advisory when they didn't know what the specific problem was, they just told me they always hear the same complaint (should be a warning to them), but that's the way they'd always done it. I should have bought a Canon. Their service is well-known to be top-notch in the industry, and the cameras are good quality for a lower price. Have used the evolt 510 for over a year and found its cost, size and weight a reasonable compromise for the kinds of photos I take, i.e. travel and grandchildren. I bought the e30 when it first became available in the US in order to have it for an upcoming trip. I've shot only about 250 photos so far, but I am very satisfied with this camera. Have not used the in camera filters yet.
Pros: Much better dynamic range than the 510
Higher ISO's have improved
Viewfinder much better for this eyeglass wearer
Not that much bigger or heavier than the 510. It's not going to be a problem on that trip
Auto white balance seems more capable. I may not need to use my expodisc as much
The level gauge feature is something I've needed and I keep it on all the time.
I didn't find the controls or menus hard to work with. The camera feels good in my hands and the buttons/dials are easy to find.
I really missed the articulating screen on the 510. My Sony DSC R1 had it and I used it a lot
The in camera image stabilization and dust removal system work well and the individual lenses are then less expensive.
The Olympus Zuiko lenses constitute the ultimate system for my needs and do so for a much lower cost, size and weight that a conventional dSLR system.
Cons:
$1299. I can buy the e3 at that price. Olympus seems to be taking advantage of some of its best customers here.
xD card slot not much use except as backup memory.

The 6 Megapixel Nikon D40 is targeted for those who want a relatively compact and light camera yet having most of the important SLR features. The D40 is priced reasonably (cheaper than D50/D80 and Canon Rebel XTi). In my opinion, if you are still considering whether to get a point and shoot camera or a DSLR, the D40 will be a better choice than any point and shoot camera, by far, even those with 8MP or 10MP. But if you are already deciding to get a DSLR or you want more control of the picture taking experience, then I would recommend you to also test the D50 and/or D80 first before deciding to buy the D40. I want you to make sure that you know what you will get (and not get) with the D40. Don't get me wrong though, the D40 is an awesome camera, and I don't think you will regret buying one. There are some limitation with the D40 which shouldn't bother most people, for example, the D40 doesn't have dedicated button to change picture quality, white balance or ISO settings (which generally only professional/enthusiast will care). Once you understand (and accept) its limitation, the D40 is a potent and exciting photography machine.

Just like all its (DSLR) siblings, the D40 powers on instantly and take pictures with almost no shutter lag which are the major advantages of a DSLR over a point and shoot camera. In addition to the P,S,A,M mode, the picture quality of the auto settings (auto, child mode, landscape etc) are also very good. With 2.5 frames per second you can capture movement progress in sports like football, basketball, baseball etc. Also great to photograph your family or child (child mode). The D40 is a great all around camera.

Some notable new features:
1. Auto (no flash) mode. Without this mode the flash will pop-up (on all other pre-programmed mode) even when you don't want to use flash (which can be annoying). The internal flash will not pop up automatically with the P,S,A,M settings.
2. In camera editing capability such as black and white, sepia and some filter effects etc. While sounds gimmicky, these features are useful especially for those who doesn't have Adobe Photoshop (or other image editing software).

To date, D40 is the smallest and lightest among all the Nikon DSLR (even smaller than the Canon Rebel XT/XTi, however the D40 is more ergonomics). I believe that choosing a camera that fits comfortably with your hands is important. Therefore, I recommend people to test the camera before buying (even if you want to buy online, please do go to a physical store and test the camera first whenever possible).

The D40 has only 3 (horizontal) autofocus point (5 for D50 and 11 for D80). If you know "The Rule of Thirds", the additional AF points above and below the center focus point (available in D50 and D80) are handy to help create the horizontal third line. However, the 3 horizontal AF point in D40 is still helpful to create the vertical third line. Also one can focus with the middle AF point and after the focus is lock then move the frame upwards/downwards to create the horizontal third line. Just make sure the exposure level is still accurate when you move the frame after you lock the focus.

About the 18-55mm II AF-S kit lens: A good lens producing sharp photos (though not a very fast lens). Also decent for close-up/macro photography. Lens uses internal focus technology and focusing operation is silent. A very decent kit lens.

Lens compatibility: Notice that with D40, autofocus function will not work for non AF-S/AF-I lens. If you already have non AF-S/AF-I Nikon lenses and want a backup or replacement camera, you will be better off buying D50, D70s or D80. If you buy the D40, it will be convenient to stick with AF-S and AF-I type lenses. I'm not sure why Nikon choose this route for the D40 (whether to enable smaller size camera or from now on Nikon will only make AF-S lens compatible camera). There are a lot of good Nikon AF-S lenses (price range added: low, medium, high) that are fully compatible with the D40 such as:

High priced lens ($1000+) are usually pro level lens which usually have better construction, faster (f-stop), and produce better quality picture. However, often times, lower price lens will serve your needs just fine. I think it is important to know what you want to use the camera for before deciding which camera and lens to buy.

Image quality of the D40 is very good which is #1 factor that I look for in a digital camera.

Here are the pros and cons of the D40 in my opinion:

Pros:
1. Nice out of the camera result picture quality
2. Affordable price
3. Compact size and light weight
4. Large and bright 2.5 inch LCD
5. 2.5 frames per second
6. B/W, Sepia, several more in-camera editing features.
7. Instant power on, fast autofocus and no shutter lag
8. Noise is acceptable at high ISO settings. Auto ISO settings available.
9. Great 18-55mm II AF-S kit lens.
10. Great battery life (400+ on a single charge. 1000+ if flash is not used).
11. Auto (flash off) mode available
12. 1/500 flash sync

Cons:
1. No direct button to change QUAL, WB and ISO settings

And unless you are shooting sports/actions professionaly (which faster focusing processor, faster frames per second and larger memory buffer might be needed), the D40 is pretty much all you will need.

I've been shooting the A900 with most of the Minolta 'G' lenses and especially like its capabilities with the F 2.8 300 mm G for birding and wildlife. I have one gripe. The "manual" for the camera is less substantial than those for the A100 or the A700. With the time Sony took to get this fine beast to market you would think they would have a full featured companion manual and have provided code for Adobe, Microsoft et al to render its RAW output. Here I am with Vista 64 and 8 Gig of ram and Vista and Lightroom both balk at the RAW output. I love the product but want a professional level back to be more integrated with the other tools sophisticated users employ. Cannon would not be caught this way with a new high end product. I'm not going to review the camera because if you're looking at this package you probably already know about the camera.

The contents of the package are an exceptional value. I was a bit confused about the exact contents due to some in consistencies.

I was a bit confused about why they would highlight the fact they were giving you a battery, but as I assumed it came with an EXTRA battery. NICE!

The major confusion came from the 70-300mm lens. Under Technical Details it says the lens is Nikon AF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 G Zoom Lens Nikon 70-300mm f/4-5.6G AF Nikkor SLR Camera Lens(this is the correct lens) but under the Product Description it says Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED AF-S. This lens is NOT and AF-S lens and requires a pin driven auto-focus and this lens is DEFINATELY not IF and doesn't include ED glass elements. The lens protrudes a good bit when zoomed all the way.

The vendor for this product is excellent and responed to my query about the lens in a timely mannor. I didn't see fit to down rate the product due to the small discrepency with the product description. I just wanted to provide clarification to any other perspective buyers. Canon EOS 1D Mark III 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)

I have owned the Mark III for a little over a year. Not long after receiving it, it quit. I sent it in for a "mirror magnet" problem. After I got it back I would get an Err99 almost daily. I documented it with Canon. It would happen most often when I turned it on for the first time. After several conversations with Canon, I sent it in and they replaced the mirror box. It has not had an Err 99 since then.

The camera was purchased as a "Blue Dot", meaning it had been fixed for the original focus issues some people were reporting. Since the second repair it has functioned flawlessly and now focuses to meet anyone's reasonable expectations. I get 80% to 90% in-focus. In most of the out of focus photos there was a legitimate reason. I can see this when I check my photos in Canon's Zoom Browser. I can see where the camera was focused at the time of shutter release. It is easy to miss a shot on a fast moving object by missing the subject or hitting a different part of the subject. Often times it would be the focus changing from head to hip (on a running dog), not the camera's fault but mine.

There are many settings on this camera to fine tune it to your way of shooting and the shooting situation. I have gotten some awesome action shots from this camera and am very pleased with it.

Canon clearly brought this camera to market too soon. It was not tested properly or either production standards were not watched. I would bet that the parts they were producing were not meeting the standards of their research and development, plus the conditions that caused a problem may not have been reproduced in test. This clearly threw Canon for a loop and they did a poor job managing public relations. I am surprised there has not been a class action lawsuit since so many pros use this camera. Some have toughed it out; those who had a lot of money went to Nikon, which is currently hitting it with some good cameras, something Canon normally is known for.

If you are buying a Mark III now, you are more than likely going to be blown-away by such a great camera that focuses and gives you shots you never imagined. I love shooting it and learning to fine-tune it for particular shooting circumstance.

This is a great DSLR camera. I've been completely satisfied with it. I originally decided on Sony because the ability to re-use my old Minolta Maxxum lenses (which is a huge plus). The Live View was a big selling point for choosing the A300 over the A100 or A200 (as well as over Canon and Nikon), it's definitely worth it for the LCD tilt and taking pictures like you do with point and shoot. My kids and wife exclusively takes pictures that way.

The stabilizer also is very good and helps alot - as I mentioned, even my son (7 yrs) can take very good pictures.

My only complaint is the popup flash, I wish it was a little higher and possibly a little more powerful. I do see some pictures have a shadow from the front of the lense cover (or overhang - not sure that its called).

Overall, a great DSLR camera for the beginner, you will not be disappointed. This is a great camera, it takes amazing pictures. Makes me feel like a professional. I did not know what to expect, been using point and shoot cameras for a while and got used to their quality. Now i realise that i was getting crap!. It night versus day. The first picture i took i realised the quality and the display is incredible.Wow! The flash does what it is supposed to, not like the ones on the point and shoot cameras. It really lights up the room and brings warmth to the photos.
I have large hands and it fits well and is super light.

The only problem i had was getting the strap in, but who cares!!.

(February 2009)Shooting in manual mode now, manipulating apperture and shutter speeds. It is amazing the type of photos one can get without using flash. The manual mode gives alot of flexibility and variation to photographs.

The battery lasts very long (over 1000 shots) even when using flash.

I have two Sony a200 and a Sony a300. In addition I have a Nikon D40, D40x, D50 and D300. The Sony a200 and a300 have the same sensor as the Nikon D40x/D60 however they seem to focus a little slower. Here are some strengths and weaknesses about the camera.

Strengths
- Image stabilization (SteadyShot)
- Kit lens is 18-70mm versus 18-55mm like Nikon and Canon
- Solid feel/construction
- Easy to use
- Uses older Minolta Alpha Mount lenses which can be found at a reasonable price on Amazon, eBay, Craigslist....
- Kiy lenses arepretty decent, heard otherwise about Canon (I am also a Nikon guy)

Weaknesses
- Sony (rather than Nikon or Canon), people won't mistake you for a pro
= Focus is a little slow
= Compact Flash cards rather than SD which are less expensive
- No affordable Prime lenses (e.g. 50mm)
- Harder to locate accessories

I should preface that I have been exposed to point-and-shoots my entire life, so I am a very fresh amateur when it comes to SLRs.

I have found it incredibly beneficial to educate myself before my purchase of the XSi about what SLR cameras are, how they function on a basic level, precisely how they differ from point-and-shoots, and what I can expect to achieve from my new camera. People who do not at least touch on these topics before their submersion into the world of SLRs will find the acclimation much more difficult, if not intolerable (as some very mislaid one-star reviews illustrate).

My XSi has helped me reach untapped creative potential that I hadn't deeply considered before. I am an artist, a painter, and my primary reasons for getting an XSi teeter between photographing my paintings for my personal records and for sale on the Internet as well as for my introduction into the realm of artistic, fine art photography. In my first few weeks of use, I can say unequivocally, and rather giddily, that the XSi achieves my hopes and quite a bit more.

My first reason for upgrading to the XSi, and to an SLR in general, is image quality. I simply wasn't content with the grain, blur, and poor coloring that most point-and-shoots afford. Aside from using my camera for normal, everyday portrait, indoor, and vacation shots, I also wish to use it professionally, to photograph my artwork and to take artistic photographs. Clarity and integrity of the image are enormously welcomed with the former, average tasks and absolutely essential in the latter, more artistically focused ones. The XSi allows me to achieve crispness, faithfulness with colors, and -- THANK GOODNESS -- far less, or absolutely no, grain in my images when shooting indoors. I am as happy as a bird with a French fry.

I have to urge that practice makes perfect for an SLR beginner. There are a plethora of settings, terminology, and camera hardware that require education to comprehend and perfect. I am new, I am learning, and I am enjoying the process of unlocking the powers of my XSi camera. I imagine it will be some time before I can consider myself rather well informed about what the camera can achieve, but even out of the box and into my amateur arms, the camera takes spectacular photographs! As extremely complex machines go, this camera is insanely easy to navigate and control. The buttons on the camera itself are perfectly placed, and the menus on the large LCD screen are just as easy to maneuver. I am thoroughly impressed with the ease of use. I have zero complaints.

One would do well to browse the web for information about the features and functions of the Canon XSi before the camera even arrives. I spent a few hours reading and watching some very helpful videos on sites like YouTube to familiarize myself with the capabilities of the camera before the box arrived at my door. I can tell you without doubt that the information I learned before I laid eyes on my camera helped tremendously. I knew what buttons to push as soon as I had my hands on it!

More specifically, I have no complaints about any elements that came with the camera. The kit lens is superb - and that truly may be the only lens you ever need. I did purchase the f1.8 II 50mm Canon lens at the same time I purchased the camera on Amazon, simply because I was so impressed with the customer photographs that had been uploaded as examples. The clarity achieved with the XSi kit lens is stellar, but I think the 50mm lens is a beautiful accessory to treat yourself to... it takes unique images that can only be achieve with that particular lens.

I also purchased an extra Canon battery so that I never have any camera downtime spent charging. The extra battery was a pricey $50 more, but I have already enjoyed the ease of having two batteries a great deal since owning my camera... well worth the money. I also purchased cheap filters to fit the kit lens of the XSi and I have already noticed higher color saturation in certain instances when using a polarizing filter. It's great fun to experiment!

Out of doors and indoors, the XSi performs masterfully. In low light and in high light, the XSi performs masterfully. I am a student with very little discretionary funding, so I had reservations about spending so much on a camera. I haven't looked back since getting my silver XSi, and there's simply no hint of buyer's remorse here. Put plainly: you get what you pay for here and I wager even a bit more. I am in passionate love.

I am a professional photographer and I have looked for a perfect take-it-anywhere camera since I abandoned my Nikon 28Ti when I stopped shooting film. I have had everything in the small camera class from the original Nikon Cp950 to the Panasonic LX3. I had Canon G9 &10s, the Pro-1, various Fujis and a Ricoh compact. None of them came close to delivering the sort of image I get from a real DSLR. For a while I used a Canon Rebel TXi, but it just wasn't a size savings because the lenses are so big.

Enter the G1. It's very small, but still easy to use and hold steady. The lenses are tiny. You can use Leica-M lenses with a cheap adapter. The image quality is right there with a DSLR. Not quite as good as a Canon 5D at ISO 800, but fully useable at everything up to 1600 ISO. The G1 at 800 is better than the G10 at 100.

I highly recommend this camera to any serious photographer looking for a small, high quality alternative to a big DSLR with way better quality than even the best small sensor camera.

The Olympus e520 is a good entry-level DSLR with in-body image stabilization, usable live view, and many other nice features. While made in China, it has a metal lens mount, and I was impressed by its overall construction. I wish I could say the same about the bundled kit lens, which is a cheap 14-42mm zoom with a plastic mount. I'm a semi-pro aviation photographer. I got acceptable results on the ground, but noticed a slight but definite blurriness in the air, despite using the image stabilizer. Ordered the companion 40-150 mm zoom separately and when that arrived, discovered that it would not deliver consistently sharp focus at infinity and max zoom, regardless of camera settings, due to motion of the lens end, also noticed the same in the 14-42 mm lens. This is unnaceptable for me. I returned the camera and both lenses for a full refund. Cameta Camera has moderate OK customer relations, but they sell a great camera package. My wife and I have been taking pictures non-stop with this camera and they all look great. We eventually purchased a book from here as well since the instruction manual is not so easy to follow. Now we are taking all kinds of great shots. People have asked us to do family portraits and next years Christmas card shots already. The accessories are very useful, especially the case, since it is a large but surprisingly light camera. The only reason I can see getting the D90 over this is if you want video, but I did not. The only negative I can think of is that the software it comes with is very weak. I know have it link up with Adobe photoshop and it is much faster and quicker. Use the SD card USB reader provided and picutres upload in a flash. I actually purchased this same package with a 55-200 VR Zoom Nikon lens added and I was skeptical. I had been through this routine before - the merchant calls or sends an email and requires a "discussion" before your order is filled. That "discussion" is an opportunity for the merchant to hard-sell you everything from over-priced batteries and memory cards to an extended warranty not worth the paper it's printed on.

NOT the case with Ace Photo. Oh, the call came. But when I answered, it was simply a rep from Ace telling me my order was shipping out the next day. No hard sell. No waste of time. No realization that the "pain" isn't worth the hassle. These guys have the best price and they don't seem to operate like the overzealous New York-based camera and video hucksters.

This package was a pleasant surprise. I planned on getting the camera, two Nikon lenses and figured the rest would go to the yard-sale pile. Everything they included in this package surprised me. The tripod is extremely light and well-made. The memory is name brand. Even the "throw-away" items like the screen protectors and lens cleaning kit have real value. My hat's off to you Ace - you guys seem to be able to do what your competition can't - merely sell someone what they want without the pressure.

Everything was quite well packaged. The box was marked "Medical Instruments - Extremely Fragile" and my shipment came in perfect order four days after I placed the order (I chose ground shipping). Nothing could have worked out better....true the case is somewhat suspect, but it didn't really fit everything anyway so I have no complaint. I'll find something to do with it even though I don't plan on putting my new D60 and lenses in it.

Oh, and by the way, the camera is EXCELLENT as well. Just getting used to it but so far, so good. I'm having fun and I'm quite pleased with the money I saved. The Rebel XS is a solid SLR but lacks a few features that I expected, but didn't think to ask about. First, you can't fire a slave flash - there is simply no place to plug one in. Second, exposure bracketing is limited to three shots, not the usually available five. Finally, exposure bracketing is not an option when operating the camera remotely using a PC. I am a professional photographer and I have looked for a perfect take-it-anywhere camera since I abandoned my Nikon 28Ti when I stopped shooting film. I have had everything in the small camera class from the original Nikon Cp950 to the Panasonic LX3. I had Canon G9 &10s, the Pro-1, various Fujis and a Ricoh compact. None of them came close to delivering the sort of image I get from a real DSLR. For a while I used a Canon Rebel TXi, but it just wasn't a size savings because the lenses are so big.

Enter the G1. It's very small, but still easy to use and hold steady. The lenses are tiny. You can use Leica-M lenses with a cheap adapter. The image quality is right there with a DSLR. Not quite as good as a Canon 5D at ISO 800, but fully useable at everything up to 1600 ISO. The G1 at 800 is better than the G10 at 100.

I highly recommend this camera to any serious photographer looking for a small, high quality alternative to a big DSLR with way better quality than even the best small sensor camera.

It's nice to have a digital camera you don't have to wait on to take the picture. And the quality...wow. I have always been a Cannon man but you can't beat a deal like this. You only pay about $150 dollars more for this kit then you do for the camera itself. The extra lens alone prices for over $250 in most places. Both lenses work great. I have not had or used this camera long enough to know if there are reliability issues looming (that others seemed to have encountered), but I am extremely pleased at this point. I have not had a SLR for about 20 years, and have been dealing with early digital point and shoot models (it has been 5 years since I bought a new camera). So, given that, it probably wouldn't take too much to make me happy. But, I have to say, for this price range, my expectations have been met!

Most of my pictures will be close-ups (both indoors and outdoors) and nature pictures when I am out hiking. I paired this body up with a fairly expensive Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM Lens, so some of the quality I have been seeing is due to the lens. So far, I have taken indoor pictures, mostly closeups of some jewelry I have made. I used the Canon software to transfer the pictures onto the computer to zoom in onto the details. I was very surprised in the clarity and sharpness I got, not even shooting in the highest quality mode, or with a macro lens.

This camera is incredible. It is so easy to use. You don't have to be a professional to buy and use this camera. It is a mommy's must have. If you are wanting to take phenomenal photos to have for years to come, this is the camera to do it.
The camera turns on immidiatly without delay and snaps the photo immediatly without delay. So basically, what you see through the viewfinder is exactly what you get in the photo. This camera I purchased has a zoom of 18-135mm. What that means for me is that I can put the camera within 2 inches of my childs face and take a detailed picture of her eyes, or even something as small as a freckle. The detail is incredible. The instruction guide that is included with the camera walks you through step by step on how to set it up. So if you are at all intimidated the idea of using a bigger camera, DON"T BE! Memories are important, that is why we take pictures to begin with. This camera is perfect for anytime, day, night , sports events, super mega close ups etc. If you do any sort of scrapbooking, I highly encourage you to use photos taken by this camera. You will not be disappointed at the quality of the photo. You may use the camera like an amateur, but the photos look professional. You can't go wrong, because when you look through the viewfinder, there are markings to help you center the photo with ease. The clarity is amazing. I did a side by side comparison with my old camera to this one and this camera picked up things i could barely see with the naked eye. I bought the D90 in November, while shooting a wedding in January the flash stopped working. I had to send it in (at my cost). They received it on 2/5/09 and have had it ever since on a PARTS HOLD. They will not expedite, they will not replace the camera, I have 2 weddings in March to shoot and I will not have my camera back to use. After all the money I spent and my loyalty to Nikon, I am just so disappointed in their customer service and inabilty/unwillingness to help me out and get this moving faster. They said they only "repair" things. Well why did it break after only 2 months? That doesn't sound like a very good product to me. They should stand behind it and send me a new one if the parts aren't avaialable for WEEKS (4+ weeks now and still on HOLD), I'm just shocked at how they will not work with me. I received this camera about two weeks ago and tested it outside, taking amazing shots of birds in flight,also architecture and inside for studio portraits and a concert in very low light.It didn't take long for me to browse through the manual and find everything I wanted to know about the camera.
The result is very clear photographs and a camera that's easy to use, quickly. I purchased a tamron 70-300 zoom also and it works great with the camera.
Definitely a great upgrade from my point-and-shoot, a fujifilm finepix s9000. Good camera but a bit more complicated to use and limited for long distance and low light shots.

I've got one major beef with this machine, and that is I T I S S O S L O W. Takes forever to power up or to load a disk. I've also had some curious lock-ups while attempting to navigate through disk menus (I suspect that I may not have been patient enough to let the player catch up before issuing another command.)
