Canon EOS 40D 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera with EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Standard Zoom Lens

I have not had or used this camera long enough to know if there are reliability issues looming (that others seemed to have encountered), but I am extremely pleased at this point. I have not had a SLR for about 20 years, and have been dealing with early digital point and shoot models (it has been 5 years since I bought a new camera). So, given that, it probably wouldn't take too much to make me happy. But, I have to say, for this price range, my expectations have been met!

Most of my pictures will be close-ups (both indoors and outdoors) and nature pictures when I am out hiking. I paired this body up with a fairly expensive Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM Lens, so some of the quality I have been seeing is due to the lens. So far, I have taken indoor pictures, mostly closeups of some jewelry I have made. I used the Canon software to transfer the pictures onto the computer to zoom in onto the details. I was very surprised in the clarity and sharpness I got, not even shooting in the highest quality mode, or with a macro lens.

Now, I can't wait for the right weekend to go out hiking and check out the spring blooms, or go to the botanical garden after the butterfly display opens!Buy Canon EOS 40D 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera with EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Standard Zoom Lens!

Nikon D80 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera Kit with 18-135mm AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor Lens

This camera is incredible. It is so easy to use. You don't have to be a professional to buy and use this camera. It is a mommy's must have. If you are wanting to take phenomenal photos to have for years to come, this is the camera to do it.
The camera turns on immidiatly without delay and snaps the photo immediatly without delay. So basically, what you see through the viewfinder is exactly what you get in the photo. This camera I purchased has a zoom of 18-135mm. What that means for me is that I can put the camera within 2 inches of my childs face and take a detailed picture of her eyes, or even something as small as a freckle. The detail is incredible. The instruction guide that is included with the camera walks you through step by step on how to set it up. So if you are at all intimidated the idea of using a bigger camera, DON"T BE! Memories are important, that is why we take pictures to begin with. This camera is perfect for anytime, day, night , sports events, super mega close ups etc. If you do any sort of scrapbooking, I highly encourage you to use photos taken by this camera. You will not be disappointed at the quality of the photo. You may use the camera like an amateur, but the photos look professional. You can't go wrong, because when you look through the viewfinder, there are markings to help you center the photo with ease. The clarity is amazing. I did a side by side comparison with my old camera to this one and this camera picked up things i could barely see with the naked eye. My family and friends are pleasantly suprised at the quality and clarity of the photos they have seen so far. I love this camera. Its an SLR with digital technology. Basically, that means, good old fashioned camera with the capability of using automatic or manual modes, but get the benefits of getting the digital clarity and not having to develope rolls of film because it saves to an SD memory card. This camera is a keeper, you will get your moneys worth on this camera because it will last you a lifetime to come. Nikon D90 DX 12.3MP Digital SLR Camera with 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED AF-S VR DX Nikkor Zoom Lens

I bought the D90 in November, while shooting a wedding in January the flash stopped working. I had to send it in (at my cost). They received it on 2/5/09 and have had it ever since on a PARTS HOLD. They will not expedite, they will not replace the camera, I have 2 weddings in March to shoot and I will not have my camera back to use. After all the money I spent and my loyalty to Nikon, I am just so disappointed in their customer service and inabilty/unwillingness to help me out and get this moving faster. They said they only "repair" things. Well why did it break after only 2 months? That doesn't sound like a very good product to me. They should stand behind it and send me a new one if the parts aren't avaialable for WEEKS (4+ weeks now and still on HOLD), I'm just shocked at how they will not work with me. I've tried to be very patient and it just hasn't worked and I still don't have my camera back from Nikon.Buy Nikon D90 DX 12.3MP Digital SLR Camera with 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED AF-S VR DX Nikkor Zoom Lens!

Canon Rebel XS 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens (Black)

I received this camera about two weeks ago and tested it outside, taking amazing shots of birds in flight, also architecture and inside for studio portraits and a concert in very low light. It didn't take long for me to browse through the manual and find everything I wanted to know about the camera.
The result is very clear photographs and a camera that's easy to use, quickly. I purchased a tamron 70-300 zoom also and it works great with the camera.
Definitely a great upgrade from my point-and-shoot, a fujifilm finepix s9000. Good camera but a bit more complicated to use and limited for long distance and low light shots.

Canon Digital Rebel XSi 12.2 MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens (Black)

I should preface that I have been exposed to point-and-shoots my entire life, so I am a very fresh amateur when it comes to SLRs.

I have found it incredibly beneficial to educate myself before my purchase of the XSi about what SLR cameras are, how they function on a basic level, precisely how they differ from point-and-shoots, and what I can expect to achieve from my new camera. People who do not at least touch on these topics before their submersion into the world of SLRs will find the acclimation much more difficult, if not intolerable (as some very mislaid one-star reviews illustrate).

My XSi has helped me reach untapped creative potential that I hadn't deeply considered before. I am an artist, a painter, and my primary reasons for getting an XSi teeter between photographing my paintings for my personal records and for sale on the Internet as well as for my introduction into the realm of artistic, fine art photography. In my first few weeks of use, I can say unequivocally, and rather giddily, that the XSi achieves my hopes and quite a bit more.

My first reason for upgrading to the XSi, and to an SLR in general, is image quality. I simply wasn't content with the grain, blur, and poor coloring that most point-and-shoots afford. Aside from using my camera for normal, everyday portrait, indoor, and vacation shots, I also wish to use it professionally, to photograph my artwork and to take artistic photographs. Clarity and integrity of the image are enormously welcomed with the former, average tasks and absolutely essential in the latter, more artistically focused ones. The XSi allows me to achieve crispness, faithfulness with colors, and -- THANK GOODNESS -- far less, or absolutely no, grain in my images when shooting indoors. I am as happy as a bird with a French fry.

I have to urge that practice makes perfect for an SLR beginner. There are a plethora of settings, terminology, and camera hardware that require education to comprehend and perfect. I am new, I am learning, and I am enjoying the process of unlocking the powers of my XSi camera. I imagine it will be some time before I can consider myself rather well informed about what the camera can achieve, but even out of the box and into my amateur arms, the camera takes spectacular photographs! As extremely complex machines go, this camera is insanely easy to navigate and control. The buttons on the camera itself are perfectly placed, and the menus on the large LCD screen are just as easy to maneuver. I am thoroughly impressed with the ease of use. I have zero complaints.

One would do well to browse the web for information about the features and functions of the Canon XSi before the camera even arrives. I spent a few hours reading and watching some very helpful videos on sites like YouTube to familiarize myself with the capabilities of the camera before the box arrived at my door. I can tell you without doubt that the information I learned before I laid eyes on my camera helped tremendously. I knew what buttons to push as soon as I had my hands on it!

More specifically, I have no complaints about any elements that came with the camera. The kit lens is superb - and that truly may be the only lens you ever need. I did purchase the f1.8 II 50mm Canon lens at the same time I purchased the camera on Amazon, simply because I was so impressed with the customer photographs that had been uploaded as examples. The clarity achieved with the XSi kit lens is stellar, but I think the 50mm lens is a beautiful accessory to treat yourself to... it takes unique images that can only be achieve with that particular lens.

I also purchased an extra Canon battery so that I never have any camera downtime spent charging. The extra battery was a pricey $50 more, but I have already enjoyed the ease of having two batteries a great deal since owning my camera... well worth the money. I also purchased cheap filters to fit the kit lens of the XSi and I have already noticed higher color saturation in certain instances when using a polarizing filter. It's great fun to experiment!

Out of doors and indoors, the XSi performs masterfully. In low light and in high light, the XSi performs masterfully. I am a student with very little discretionary funding, so I had reservations about spending so much on a camera. I haven't looked back since getting my silver XSi, and there's simply no hint of buyer's remorse here. Put plainly: you get what you pay for here and I wager even a bit more. I am in passionate love.

Buy her. Now.

Samsung BD-P1200 Blu-ray Disc Player

Today, February 26, 2009, is the day I cut my losses and buy a new player. After fighting with the Samsung for almost two years, I've had enough. During that time, there was never a moment where all the discs in my collection played properly...or, in some cases, at all. The first firmware update helped, but subsequent attempts seemed to do nothing. AND even if they had, about 50% of the audio CD's that I try to play on it skip. They always have. And I suspect that no firmware update is going to address that. The most maddening thing about this is that, being an "early adopter" of the format, I paid a fortune for this thing. It's going to be a lonnnnggg time before I consider buying another Samsung product. Buy Samsung BD-P1200 Blu-ray Disc Player!

I have owned this product for approximately sixteen months. 'great sound, and picture; but a little slow to turn on and load a disk.

My unit shipped with version 2.3 firmware and recently needed a newer version in order to run newer bluray disks. I had to download from the Japanese website because the North American website did not have the latest version (2.5). The first download froze. The second attempt was going to take six hours so I terminated it. The third attempt took about an hour and a half. Simple to set up. Have it hooked up to my Pioneer Kuro 50" plasma and it looks beautiful. Slightly annoyingly long time to start up when you turn it on.

I just have this slightly nagging feeling that buying a blueray player was just a waste of money as compared to a regular DVD player or an AppleTV. Not sure if paying more for this one vs one of the cheaper blueray players was worth it either.Buy Panasonic DMP-BD50K 1080p Blu-Ray Disc Player!

Samsung BD-P1000 Blu-Ray Disc Player

Where can I begin, I purchase the BD-P1000 the day it hit the shelf. That was the start of my horror story. I am a home theatre fanatic and I like the best of the best! I have two Pioneer Elite and I thought the Samsung BD-1000 would fit well with my home theatre system... But I was wrong!! It take forever for the player to start up, several firmware updates and I still have several Blu Ray Discs in my library that still doesn't play. It get frustrating after renting a Blu-Ray movie from BlockBuster or buying them from BestBuys my Samsung BD-P1000 is not able to play them. It's like russian roulette... some play... some don't!!! After several phone calls to Samsung customer service, numerous firmware updates and being repaired (3) times I still have several movies in my library unable to play. So I finally got fed up and went to my local BestBuy store and purchased another Blu-Ray player. Not to mention I have a MX 3000 remote control that control all my components hidden away in the closet. That is programed to my SamSung Blu-Ray player and cost $400 to get reprogrammed I was forced to by another SamSung product. Which works fine 5 star (BD-P2550). To end this review. For the amount of $1000 I have had players $75 that work better. If you ever buy a SamSung product do your research and remember this... SamSung has the WORST customer service I have ever experienced!!!!!Buy Samsung BD-P1000 Blu-Ray Disc Player!

LG BH200 Super Blu Blu-Ray HD DVD Combo Player

I got this unit when the HDDVD vs Blu-ray war just finished. Reason I did was because I knew I was about to find some HD-DVD's for REAL cheap now. You can still get awesome deals ($3 and up) if you shop around and still get that great picture quality. So this player offers up conversion on DVDs, HDDVD and Blu-ray all in one??? NO BRAINIER! Now something new to the mix now is that now you have to periodically UPDATE your firmware. What does that mean? You are upgrading the software the unit is using, much like updating the software in you computer to run the newer stuff. Now some players make this easy to do (via USB port) and others make it hard (Ethernet port only). Fortunately this unit falls under the easy category. Go to the web site http://us.lgservice.com and get the newest firmware, save it on your USB portable card and plug it into the front port, follow updating instructions as provided on the web page with the updates and you are golden. These firmware updates are KEY TO HAVE A ENJOYABLE EXPERIENCE watching these blu-rays as they fix sound/picture/compatibility issues that occur every time they add more features to these blu-rays (Blu-ray Live and U-control are the biggest offenders of BLu-ray player lock ups out these). Bottom Line is I have been VERY happy with the unit and the recent upgrade to the firmware addressed alot of the issues plaging the unit. The price is steep but look at it this way, it is almost $200-$300 for a new blu-ray player, yes HDDVD is dead but there are thousands of those movies out these for BARGIN prices and they ARE HD format, enjoy the benifits of them loosing the war!!! and then the up converter of your DVDs. My five year old loves to have movie day, who can blame him, once you have seen the picture from this player you willn't go back to standard. It is a little pricy but if you can find one at a nice price,I recommend you buy it. I prefer HD over blue-ray, that's just me, it doesn't matter which format you buy (HD-Amazon.com), they both have great pictures. Some movies have better pictures than others, so be mindful of that. Marantz BD7003 Blu-ray Disc high-definition player

The BD7003 is a Blu-ray player for the performance minded video/audio enthusiast. The unit also may not be for those still using older receivers/processors, it has no onboard decoding or multi-channel analog outputs. To clarify the 7003 will work with older receivers with either optical or coaxial digital audio inputs you just won't be able to take advantage of the HD audio formats which are as large of an improvement in audio as HD is to video. See more on this later.

Let's get the bad out of the way, picture quality would have easily scored a five, as well as looks and ease of use, though I found the manual some what confusing, but what made me have to give the 7003 a four is lack of features in a player at this price, the unit is still slow loading discs, skipping chapters, and the disc drive is loud. I can hear the disc drive during loading making those grinding sounds with the entertainment center door closed and me on my sofa about 11 to 12 feet away.

My previous BD player was the Samsung BD-P1200 which got excellent picture quality reviews due to the Silicon Optics video chip set. I began to look for a replacement when the unit showed some disc incompatibility and would not bitstream the HD audio formats. I was a bit worried about being able to find a player with the picture performance of the 1200. I also borrowed my daughter's Samsung BD-P1500 for a while since it did bitstream. I had an opportunity to audition a BD-7003 in my home. While I was hesitant based on price and features I brought one home any way to see how it did with my Marantz AV8003.

First off let me say that all Blu-ray pictures are NOT the same. I found this out when putting the 1500 in place of my 1200, the picture quality of the 1500 was not as good. It was also evident when I put the 7003 in place. The BD-7003 has a stunningly good picture both HD and standard DVD. To my surprise the 7003's picture was more vibrant and vivid than the 1200. The 7003 gave the blackest blacks I've ever seen and images seemed sharper with more background detail. I was also please to see that the increase in sharpness and vivid picture held true on standard DVD as well. With the 7003 fine detail was easier to see. I was able to make out detail in eyes I've never seen before. On one movie some torches were burning and the shades of color in the flames made them look very real. I am very impressed with the picture quality performance of the BD-7003.

I like the remote, it is comfortable to hold and the main buttons are logically laid out at the bottom. You have your <, stop, play, > sort of arched with the Pause below them centered. Above that is skip chapter forward and back, the buttons are a different shape. Not far above that is the cross pad and enter. Above that are buttons you probably wont' use much. Set up was easy, the On Screen Display showed a chart similar to what you see in the manual. I think I changed one setting for audio and off I was. The remote shouldn't give anyone a problem in the dark. The 7003 has the only remote I've ever seen with a separate button for power on and off.

A feature well worth mentioning and greatly missed on most Blu-ray players is the Memory Stop. If any interruptions where I have to Pause or Stop the movie just hit Play on the BD-7003 and I can pick up where I left off. Before if I Paused too long or hit Stop on accident I had to go through the movie looking for the closest point where I left off.

The 7003 does have Bonus View for picture in a picture or seeing special features on the disc if this is your thing. It also has Zoom and Angle to play with. The 7003 also was able to play a Blu-ray disc that would not play in either of the Samsung players. And my 1200 was up to date on firmware.

In order to take advantage of HD audio sound, Dolby Tru-HD and DTS-MA, you will need a receiver or preamp with the decoders built in as the BD-7003 does not have them. It should also be noted that these HD audio formats are only accessible with HDMI connections as optical or coaxial digital connections are not compatible, from any unit, period. Bitstreaming these HD audio tracks to my AV8003 worked very well and sound quality was incredible. One thing to note is the manual does not mention DTS-MA but Marantz's website says the BD-7003 will bitstream it and in fact it does. After a short panic attack I was all better after dropping a disc in with DTS-MA and seeing the DTS Master Audio flash on the front of my processor.

To sort of sum things up, despite the short comings I mentioned, I love this player and highly recommend it if it fits into your system as it did mine. I would encourage anyone looking for a Blu-ray player to see the picture quality of this unit. It would be painful but after using the BD-7003 I probably would have paid the original retail of $799.00 but at $549.00 it's in line with most of the premium name brands.

Side notes:

1. I wondered why new Blu-ray players, even those that haven't hit the street yet, are coming out with only version 1.1 and no internet connectivity. The reason, theory, I found is the circuitry for internet connectivity can degrade performance of the unit. I've seen no white papers or tests but I did see the theory in print. Take it for what it's worth.

2. There are 3 levels of digital audio, one being what we are used to on standard DVD which is compressed to save space on the disc, two is a slightly higher bit rate available on Blu-ray via optical or coaxial digital connection referred to as "Dolby Plus" or "DTS-HD", third is lossless or true to the original movie soundtrack master formats called Dolby Tru-HD or DTS-MA (Master Audio). To take advantage of the 3rd level the signal has to be passed via HDMI to your receiver, the decoding can happen in the player and be sent LPCM. Or bitstreamed to be decoded internally by a receiver or processor with the decoders. You can also use Multi-channel analog connections if included on your Blu-ray player with built in decoding for the HD formats and have a compatible receiver with these inputs. One note about Multi-channel analog or LPCM where using the Blu-ray decoder, the player will need to also include several different speaker set up features as on a HT receiver in order for sound to be properly balanced and set. This is another problem I had with the BD-P1200, it only gave me adjustment for speaker size, large or small, no volume level, no crossovers, no delay etc. So while the sound of the HD audio was good it was also untamed.

For more information on the various formats the Dolby Labs and DTS websites are good resources and even have speaker placement diagrams.Buy Marantz BD7003 Blu-ray Disc high-definition player!

Sony BDP-S5000ES Blu-ray Disc Player

This player is the promise of Bluray fully delivered. As before, video is spectacular. Audio is spectacular in every codec as well. DTS master audio (not included in previous sony products except PS3)and Dolby HD are fantastic. The internal decoding and full bandwith 7.1 PCM output is a great plus for all of us that have audiophile equipment that does not include internal decoders for the new formats. This also ensures that users of HDMI version 1.1 equipment don't have to fret about having 1.3 compliant equipment to enjoy the rewards of completely uncompressed 7.1 surround. Works beautifully with my Rotel 1069 preamp through HDMI. However, best of all, the player is finally fast. For those that have owned previous generation bluray players the most annoying thing about the technology was the patience testing load times. That was the bad old days, welcome to the good days, plop in the disc and go. In my expirience, even with the fast load feature set to off it is at least twice as fast (if not faster) as my departed BDPS2000ES. The menus and additional features work seamlessly and instantly, no more "processing time" hastle. I'm using it with an Elite pro110 plasma and can attest that its video fidelity is reference quality, it simply doesn't get better than this, for any price. Build quality is impressive, the player feels like its built from a ton of bricks and its completely silent in operation, the fan is inaudible (at least I have never heard it). The internet connection is excellent, just plug and go. In fact, this player has essentially zero negatives from any performance standpoint, NONE. Its not a particularly attractive piece of gear, simply a box with a tray in the front, but that is fine. Which, of course, leads to the only negative, its price. For those that want the very best in videophile equipment, the price is justified simply because its performance is, for the time being, second to none in all parameters, better yet, it demonstrates that the technology has finally reached fruition. This player is the first evidence that bluray is now a mature technology with no performance or functional compromises. Hopefully all its funtional advantages will trickle down to more affordable players soon. BTW, anyone that dismisses this player as an expensive alternative to a PS3, has not used it, or at least has not used with gear that will plainly show the significant differences in audio and video performance. Very highly recommended.
One more thing...... The picture of the player is inaccurate that is the BDPS2000ES, Cheers!Buy Sony BDP-S5000ES Blu-ray Disc Player!
