Samsung LNT1953H 19-Inch LCD HDTV

I purchased this TV in March of 2008. Just in the last month or so, I started having problems with the power connection. From what I can tell, it isn't the cord, but the connection on the TV. I was able to jiggle it around and get it to connect, but any bump to the TV and the connection is gone. I have a new 40" Samsung that is working great, but I'm very disappointed with my 19". Panasonic TC-32LX600 32-Inch LCD HDTV

Hi,
I own both the 26" and the 32" version of this TV. I initially bought a 26LX600 and was so happy with it that I ended up buying a 32LX600. Although there are many less expensive sets in this size range, the Panasonic had the best picture quality. I looked at Samsung, Sanyo, Sony, Phillips, Magnavox etc and not one had as good an overall picture quality as these sets. It is unfortunate that they are no longer current models.
The contrast ratio of 3000:1 is really excellent for a set in this size range, and the fast reaction times for the display (8 us I believe)makes for a picture that does not have the usual artifacts found in lesser sets.
This LX600 series of TV's has every possible input type one could ever want. Both my 26 and 32" have HDMI, S video and component video inputs as well as a coax video input. Both sets have an onboard tuner that will pull in both digital and analog stations via a rabbit ear antenna. In fact, digital broadcasts have the picture quality of anything I can receive via my satellite. Our PBS station sends out one channel in High Definition and the picture quality with both my Panasonic sets is really breath taking. If you can find a TC-32LX600 or a TC-26LX600 and are in the market for this size set, bite the bullet and pony up the extra cash for one of these. Believe me, your eyes will thank you. Oh, another plus is that both the 26" and 32" have a 10 watt RMS per channel built in stereo amp and speakers. So, if you prefer to just use the TV's sound, this one has it covered. Sound quality is well above average as compared to other similar sized TV's. The set also has audio out jacks so you can run the sound out to a receiver if you like. The only headache is that these audio out jacks are at a fixed level. By this I mean using the remote to adjust set volume has no effect on the set's audio out jacks. If you use them, you need to adjust your sound volume via your receiver. I drive both my sets with Marantz DVD players and found that things worked best with either the S-video connection or the component video connections. Ditto for connectiong it to a satellite receiver. I tried the HDMI connection, but this presented issues with respect to being able to select the proper aspect ratio with certain programming or DVD's. Actually, when I did get it to work properly, I found no advantage to using the HDMI over the component video. The bottom line is that I have yet to find a better set then these Panasonic TV's.
One is over a year old, has been through a house fire (received water and smoke damage) and the other is about 7 months old. Both work flawlessly. I did have to open up and clean out the one that went through the house fire, but amazingly it is still working! In fact, it was so soaked and dirty that I had written it off. I let it dry for about a week and just plugged it in to see what I figured would be a cool show of sparks before tossing it. Much to my amazement, the thing started to play! Even the remote still worked! So, these TV's are tough!Buy Panasonic TC-32LX600 32-Inch LCD HDTV!

Sony KDF-E60A20 60-Inch LCD Rear Projection Television

I've always loved Sony TVs. Had a 48" model for about 15 years and just traded up to this 60" hi-def model. OMG! It's spectacular ... from the size (better than being in a movie theater) to the exceptional picture quality to the brilliance of clarity and color to the overall experience. Also, got an unbelievable price from BrandsMart ... $1,298! Whatever you pay for this, it's worth it if you're a TV junkie ... especially for sports. Sony FWD50PX2/S 50-Inch Plasma TV Silver

I've owned the black version of this monitor for about a year and half, and overall it's been very enjoyable. It's used as a PC/TV monitor. Why the 2 stars then? Because after about a year a sparkling red pixel appeared and has remained in the lower left half of the screen. As far as I know there is not a remedy for this. This might sound minor but it can be distracting while watching a HD feature within about 10' of the screen. Also for the record, it bothers me, but not the wife. If anyone knows a cure for a pixel fix for a *plasma*, please comment to this review!

The other disappointing thing was about 2 weeks ago I stepped out of the room while the TV was running and returned 5 minutes later to find the picture became very grainy and dark. I turned off the TV and turned it back on only to hear a clicking noise as if the TV was trying to turn on, but could not.

The good news is that this monitor came with a 2 year warranty. It was quite easy to get a Sony registered tech to come to the house after a quick online search(Within a week). After describing the incident to the tech over the phone, he ordered the parts he felt necessary to repair the panel and we scheduled a appointment once Sony sent him the parts. He replaced some boards in the monitor and it's back up and running as it was. Initially, the sparkling red pixel seemed to disappear after this repair; however, it seemed to re-appear about an hour after he left. It probably never left and just went un-noticed as it only appears during the transmissions of certain colors. From the bit of research I did, it would appear that this is a manufacturing defect of sorts. Also, because only one pixel affected, it's not covered under warranty. In fact, in the instruction booklet it list this as being somewhat normal, specifically red, green, and blue pixels. That is why it's important to make sure that there is a return policy of sorts that won't hurt your wallet when you purchase this monitor.

Some other thoughts are a stand or wall mount can easily add another $100-$300 to the price, and you might consider a consumer version of a plasma with a built in HD tuner or speakers. Personally I use this with my cable box tuner and surround sound speakers, and had no need for another version.

Using Component, or HDMI with HD programming is simply awesome, while the other inputs(s-video, composite, etc) are disappointing.

This monitor has an dvi port which means you needs to buy a dvi to hdmi cable, or buy the optional hdmi input module.

The remote looked like it would come with a $30 tv and looks cheaper then most $9 remotes in stores.

My first choice at the time was a Panasonic TH-50PH8UK, which seemed to be the way to go after reading countless positive reviews. However it was on backorder just about everywhere for months, and I lost patience and went with this.

Shortly after I bought the Sony, I also bought a Panasonic TH-42PH9UK(the next generation of Panasonic) for the bedroom and love it. I love them both, but have always liked the Panny more because it's setup is more user friendly, and it has been more reliable. Also, the Panasonic reads the incoming signal faster and sometimes the Sony takes a while to display the signal from the cable box. The pictures of both are pretty identical, and beat any LCD I've owned or viewed.

The last thought is you should have someone home who is capable of lifting the plasma as every unit I've received has been delivered by only one person. It's best to have two people at home capable of lifting though, as it's not the job of the delivery person to carry the plasma for you. However, all the delivery people I've dealt with have helped me get the monitor inside even though curbside is the norm. They even helped unpack it to make sure it wasn't damaged.Buy Sony FWD50PX2/S 50-Inch Plasma TV Silver!

Sony KV-36FS100 36" Flat-Screen TV

This television is a great example of Sony's quality. The 36" set is big and heavy (approx. 220 lbs), but once installed the picture and sound quality are impressive. The color is accurate, and the set has several picture settings such as movie and sports which help tweak the picture to what is being watched. What is especially surprising is the superior sound quality from the two side speakers. I have the television hooked up to a component audio system, and in many cases, the TV's audio is as good as the component stereo's output, with the exception of a deeper and more resonant bass.

This television has an analog tuner so it will not receive over-the-air signals when the conversion occurs in 2009, but it will continue to work perfectly for cable TV.

I highly recommend this set. Probably all of these are now on the used market, but a well-cared-for model should be a great investment.Buy Sony KV-36FS100 36" Flat-Screen TV!

Sony Bravia XBR-Series KDL-40XBR4 40-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV

We purchased this television one year ago today. It has not worked for two months. We have spent endless hours with the Customer Service Dept on the phone. The parts (computer & panel) just went out on it for no reason. They do not have the parts to fix the television. They offered us a refurbished TV (someone elses problem TV) which we declined. If you take the refurbished TV, our warranty and extended warranty are null and void. We wanted ours fixed. Customer Service (India I suppose) lied numerous times regarding the delivery date of the parts. We went from "the Authorized Dealer will receive the part in 2 days" to "it is backordered until the end of February". They offered us a brand new xbr6 television replacement for an additional $300.00. They said it would be here within two weeks. No sight of that. Sony Customer Service is the worst I have ever dealt with, a bunch of liars. If you get lucky and get a TV with no problems, then you are good. I advise against buying any Sony products. Pioneer PDP-6070HD 60" PureVision Plasma HDTV

After about 2 months of research of looking at Samsung, Panasonic and LG I finally decided on Pioneer. I couldn't afford the high cost of the newer generation of Pioneer plasmas. So I took a serious look at the PDP-6070HD (720P). After doing exhausting comparison between this model and the 6020/6010 which are 1080P units. I came to realize that Pioneers plasmas are made so well that you would be hard pressed to actually see a deference between the sets. After getting this unit home the picture is just simply "Jaw Dropping" I am amazed with the PQ. I also have the PDP-5070HD in my bedroom, that is what made me to start the search for a replacement of my HLP-6163W (Samsung DLP). The picture difference was like night and day. I am very happy to have purchased this unit. One of the best buys that I have made. I have been running this unit for about a month now and have not been able to find anything bad to say about this TV. It may be a couple of years old (in model #) but it still reviles the best units on the market today. Buy Pioneer PDP-6070HD 60" PureVision Plasma HDTV!

Philips 20PF5120 20-Inch Flat LCD TV

I bought this tv in March of 2006 from SAMs to use in the kitchen of my vacation home. Shortly after I got it (July of 2006) I had problems. When I turned the set on the green light would come on but almost at once the green light would go out and the red light would come on in it's place. No picture, no sound, nothing. I called customer service and went through a couple of tests and was told to send it back by FedEx - which Phillips didn't pay for. I would think that if the set was under warranty they should pay shipping but they didn't. I got a different set back (different serial #)in a month to 6 weeks and it seemed to work fine but a couple of weeks later I noticed that when I would turn the set on the picture would come on but no sound! However I discovered that if I turned the set off and back on I had sound. I called Phillips and reported this but they didn't know what was causing this. Since it did work I didn't want to pay the freight to send it back again and get another one that might do the exact same thing so I got a case number and made a record of the problem. Then in December of 2008 I had exactly the same problem I had the first time (green light then red light no pic no sound) I called Phillips again and was told that I would have to take it in for repair but the set was out of warranty. When I gave them the two case numbers from before they had no record of those cases. The woman said that they probably cleaned out the database and deleted old cases after some period of time.
I called the phone # of the service center she gave me and was told that it would cost me $89 non refundable to have the problem diagnosed. She also told me that there were very few parts listed for this set and even if they couldn't get the parts to fix it I would still have to pay $89.
My advise is not to buy this set.Buy Philips 20PF5120 20-Inch Flat LCD TV!

Sharp Aquos LC46SE94U 46-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV

This is among the best quality TVs made in 2008.
There are now sets with better picture quality, such as the Limited Edition series (also from Sharp) which use LED backlighting, but they are quite expensive.
There are many brands of television, but Samsung and Sharp manufacture the vast majority of LCD panels.
Other brands, even big names like Sony, Toshiba, and Pioneer, only buy panels from manufacturers and build electronics around them. Sony, in particular, charges quite a lot for their brand name even though they didn't even make the panel!

Some Sharp panels from past models were known for having a color banding problem. This was endemic in Sharp televisions for a long time, though most peopled did not notice. I am happy to report that this set does not suffer the same problem.

Absolute contrast is 3000:1, 3 times that of most other sets. Dynamic contrast (contrast achieved by adjusting the intensity of the backlight) is 27,000:1, and in practice, the brightness this set can produce is almost over the top. It literally hurts my eyes and lights up the entire living room, though I usually keep it at low settings because I am not into intensely bright screens.

My 46" set uses about 150W of power at 20% backlight -- not bad. It can use just over 300W at full brightness (actual measurement).

The internet service, "Aquos Connect", is fairly worthless. It is slow, takes up screen space (or the whole screen), and has terribly response latency -- if you switch views or turn it on/off, it takes a while to comply. It may be handy for showing weather or stock information occasionally, but you will probably be more likely to walk to a nearby computer or change to an appropriate TV station rather than work with the clunky TV internet interface. The possibility of remote servicing and diagnosis sounds promising, however.

I can't comment on the speakers as I use an external stereo.

The connections are well placed and, in particular, the HDMI and RCA ports on the right side of the TV are very useful for connecting temporary hardware, such as a friend's game console.

This TV handles many more resolutions with the VGA connector than any previous HDTV I've had. I tested it at 1600x1200, but no higher. Works well.
I use this screen mainly as a computer monitor, connecting my computers DVI-out to one of the TV's HDMI connectors using an HDMI cable and adapter. It looks beautiful and works very well for both business applications (even Photoshop, which has long been a poor program to run on other LCD screens due to color accuracy problems) and gaming. The response time is so fast as to not notice any blur or shearing, and the TV works perfectly at a full 1080P, 60 Hz.

This screen may be able to display at 120Hz, but it cannot accept input at 120Hz. 60Hz is the maximum, at least at 1080P. This leads one to wonder how it can play a Blu-Ray movie without shearing at 24P if it cannot accept input at an even multiple of 24.

One final noteworthy comment is that this screen does NOT have a glare problem at all. Many glossy screens, especially those on notebooks, reflect the surrounding light so well that you can shave in your reflection. Very distracting. This television has absolutely no glare problem whatsoever. Its glare is even lower than the previously popular matte (non-shiny) LCD panels.
I can only see noticeable light reflection at about a 60-90 degree viewing angle (though even at extreme angles, the picture still looks fine).

Overall I am very happy with this TV and find its faults to be incredibly minor. I'd recommend it over any other 2008 television set (though Samsung has very nice panels as well). However, if you want the highest-end and are willing to pay for it, look for something with LED backlighting.Buy Sharp Aquos LC46SE94U 46-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV!

Toshiba 27AF45 27" Flat Screen TV (Silver)

I shlepped this thing home and upon plugging it in found that there were large purple splotches in the corners and center of the screen which get worse and the unit warms. I know this has to do with the alignment of the beam, maybe a magnet nearby, whatever, but dunno what to do with it. Called Toshiba and was told it is my own tough luck. So I've owned it for about 2 years now. he purple splotches are annoying, but otherwise its a nice TV. Reading through the reviews here I see that essentially buying them is a crapshoot. They're either really nice or real crap. And the likelihood of getting a lemon seems around 40% which isn't too good. Wow, The picture on this set blows away DLP sets! No color wheel to breakdown or add rainbow artifacts, and the light source will last much longer than other types. The three LCD panels have better contrast than DLP sets, and are much larger, there by reducing the obvious pixels that our DLP had. Panasonic has a winner here, too bad that rear projection TVs are going away, they are much less costly than Plasma or other direct view tvs. We don't mind that it won't wall hang, the set is attractive and has a small foot print anyway. Samsung LN40A450 40-Inch 720p LCD HDTV

I had purchased this TV in October of '08 from another vendor. I was researching 720p sets for about month before I purchased. I had planned on using my media center PC with it. I really didn't want a 1080p set because the only true 1080p source these days is blu-ray, which I had no intention of investing in. I was impressed with all aspects of the set since I bought it. Ghosting was present sometimes. I found it really depends on the source of the content that produces more or less ghosting. Yes there are the 120hz HDTVs out there, but from what I have seen they can't get rid of all the ghosting. 120hz sets double the frame rate of content that isn't supposed to be run at such a high frame rate. The result is weird and unnatural looking motion in movies that are only supposed to be running at 24 frames per second, not 120. Ghosting and motion blur are an inherent limitation in LCD technology, LCD owners will have to accept this. I was looking into plasmas to, but all the 720p plasmas I found seemed to have a native resolution of 1024x768, which is not a wide screen resolution. In addition, plasmas are subject to burn-in on the screens, something I didn't wanna have to deal with. Plasma sets are being phased out pretty fast anyway. So I chose this TV, it wasn't too big, wasn't too small, and had everything I required.

Out of the Box, it showed impressive HD picture with off-air HD channels. The setup with auto-program was very easy and straight forward. SD content is very watchable. Hooking my media center PC up to the VGA connection produced a flawless picture. The built-in speakers produced a satisfying full sound. The unit seemed like the perfect 720p set, until I tried to use more than one HDMI device. Apparently, for some very odd reason, only 1 out of the 3 HDMI inputs will utilize the TV's native resolution of 1360x768. As many people know, if you are not running an LCD display at its native resolution, you are not getting its full potential in picture quality and sharpness. The other 2 HDMI inputs default to a resolution of 1280x720, which because its not the native res of the TV, looks blocky and slightly out of focus. So for me, these other 2 HDMI inputs are basically useless. I am going to have to buy an HDMI hub now to accommodate my multiple HDMI devices so they can all utilize the TV's native resolution. If I had known about this flaw, I would have never purchased it. Samsung, if you are listening, is there a purpose behind this design flaw? Buy Samsung LN40A450 40-Inch 720p LCD HDTV!

Toshiba 46RV525U 46-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV

I purchased this set on sale at Sears and they even price matched it to the price that CompUSA was selling it at. I got a great deal on it. I took it home hooked it all up and ran into trouble right away with my HD Cable box. I live in the Tampa, Florida area and have Brighthouse networks cable. They use a Scientific Atlanta Exploreer 8300HDC HD DVR box. I could operate the cable box with the cable company remote with no problem. As soon as I would turn on the Toshiba LCD, the remote would no longer work. Turn the TV off and the remote worked just fine. I went through 3 different cable boxes with Brighthouse networks. I then had a Sears repair tech come out to check the TV and make sure nothing was wrong with it. Upon inspection he decided to call Toshiba directly and see what was going on. Toshiba admitted to having a problem with this model of cable box and they did not know what was causing the interference at this time. Their recommendation was to check with Brighthouse to see if they had a different brand of cable box. If they did not, then they (Toshiba) recommended returning the TV for a brand other than Toshiba.

So Brighthouse did not have a different brand which led to me returning the TV. I did this with great hesitation as the Toshiba had an excellent picture and sound. I really loved the TV and the features it had. I just wish it would have worked with my cable box.

I returned the TV with no problem and purchased a Sharp Aquos LC-46D65U. I set that TV up with no problem and there are no interference issues.

I invited my brother over to show him how awesome it looks to play high definition computer games on a 42" 1080P TV and he was blown away! He plays on a 24" 1900x1200 computer monitor, and he was surprised at how the picture clarity was still there even when the same picture is stretched out nearly 4 times as much (24" to 42")!

The quality and aesthetics are spot on as well! It rivals Samsung in all ways. Excellent picture, very sleek styling, and sturdy construction!

The only con is the remote, where it is very large and must be pointed nearly directly at the sensor otherwise the TV will not respond.

I'm primarily using it for my computer/gaming machine, but as well I use it for TV and PS3.Buy LG 42LB5D - 42" LCD TV - widescreen - 1080p (FullHD) - HDTV - gloss black!

Toshiba REGZA 26LV67 26-Inch LCD HDTV with DVD Player

Toshiba makes two nearly identical 26 inch LCD TV/DVD player combos. The 26LV67 and 26LV47. The 67 model lists for $50 more, and as far as I can tell the only difference is that the spec sheet for the 67 lists "CineSpeed" as a feature, which means that the response time is below 8ms, while the 47 model does not list this feature, which would suggest that the response time is slower. However, in reviewing the spec sheets for all of the Toshiba models, it did not look like they had been created by the same person at the same time, so this may have been an oversight.

I wanted the best TV I could get, so I went for the 67. It was very difficult to locate, but Amazon had it through a retailer called ANTOnline. I went ahead and ordered, but what I got was the 47 model. It was only a few days before Christmas at that point and the TV was a gift for my wife, so I was not going to return it. Also, the box carried a big CineSpeed logo on it, so now I was really confused. I called Toshiba directly, but their CSR had no more information than I did about what might be the difference between these two model numbers. I am still confused and would be fascinated if somebody could explain to me why Toshiba makes two units that are so similar that even their own reps can't figure out the difference.

Anyway, I hooked the TV up on Christmas day and everything worked great. I screwed the coaxial cable in from the cable company, plugged it in, and it looked beautiful. I scanned for stations and it found a few I had never seen before, including a couple of HD channels coming over the airwaves. DVDs look absolutely gorgeous. It is also very easy to scroll between screen modes if you want to change how the TV handles 4:3 signals. There is a mode that lets you take a 4:3 signal that is letterboxed and have the picture fill the entire screen with no black around the edges. I am very satisfied with the TV.

Also, ANTOnline was pretty good about the error. They responded within a few hours to my e-mail and at my request refunded me the difference between their price for the two models, which was about $17. I would not bother calling their telephone number though, as all they do is tell you to send an e-mail.

Finally, I'd like to mention that my research led me to the conclusion that Toshiba has the best LCD TVs out there with the possible exception of Sony. However, in the past ten years I have purchased a high-end VHS deck, a portable DVD player and a mini DV camcorder from Sony and all have broken within 12-18 months. Having gone 0 for 3 with Sony in the past, I did not even consider Sony for this purchase.Buy Toshiba REGZA 26LV67 26-Inch LCD HDTV with DVD Player!

Sylvania LD195SL8 19-Inch LCD HDTV with Built-in DVD Player

We got this TV/DVD player mainly for the DVD and to watch our video camera videos. We are happy with it and liked that it only weighs 11 lbs. The picture is clear, it's relatively easy to use. If using for a TV you do need an antenna and/or cable service...that's not what we got it for. We just wanted something portable, light-weight and easy to use and thats what we got.Buy Sylvania LD195SL8 19-Inch LCD HDTV with Built-in DVD Player!
